Access to the building
Street level access to the building is via the main entrance. The building can be entered at either side (from Harris Street or Jacson Street) via a ramp or a short flight of steps which lead to automatic glass doors. These doors open into the entrance hall.
Inside the entrance hall there are ramps or a short flight of steps to the main museum door. This is a tall, wooden framed door with glass panels at the top. These doors are assisted to ease opening. This gives access to the foyer containing the museum shop and information point.
Access to the galleries
There are wide staircases, of approximately 38 steps, connecting each floor from both sides of the foyer.
There is a lift to the first and second floors. It is located through the glass doors and to the right. There is a button to call for the lift by the side of the lift doors. There is also a stair lift for wheelchair users (operated by the museum assistants) to the Mezzanine Gallery and Gallery 4 (upper).
The third floor is the Egyptian Balcony. This is not open to the general public, but there are regular guided tours available and groups can visit by pre-arrangement. The balcony is accessed via three steep flights of steps. A touch-screen audio-visual presentation (situated on the second floor) allows visitors to explore the balcony via a computer terminal. The presentation includes BSL interpretation and subtitles. Please note that there is no lift to the Egyptian Balcony and it is not open to unaccompanied children and children under 8 years.
